Some things to consider with a new home addition:

• Property lines.  Do you know where your property starts and ends?  This is critical to know because property lines and setbacks determine what you can construct and how you can construct on your property relative to abutting properties.
• Design continuity.  Just slapping an addition to a section of your house doesn't cut it.  How will the new addition continue the existing design and layout of the house?  Will the addition allow for good house flow, or will it create potential code violations such as blocking second fire exit?
• Draft plans.  Is your general contractor just going to fill a foundation, throw some walls and a roof up and call it a day...or will your general contractor hire an architect to properly draft the design plans, also knowing the local town ordinances and laws regarding your specific construction so that it gets approved by the town?  You'd be surprised how many additions are built without approval from the town, or the fact that permits are not pulled.  (But you didn't hear any of this from here).
