We're getting calls and emails asking if we are still in business during Coronavirus.  The answer is YES  as we are considered essential workers!  Rest assured, know that not only is Skillville Corp. still open for business, we also take social distancing practices seriously.  Know that we are doing proper clean ups and protecting our workers during this time.  This should give you an ease of mind.

Things To Consider When Installing A New Roof

With the year quickly winding down and the crisp air of Fall is slowly creeping upon us, it goes without saying that typically triggers us to start getting ready for Winter.  With that being said, do you want to experience another asphalt shingle blow off or a roof collapse.  It should also go without saying that the roof is really the most important part of your house since it literally protects everything underneath.  Even though your roof is so critical for the existence of your house, not much care or attention is usually placed into this detail.  Here are some things to consider so you don't have to put in a new roof once every 5 years.

Some things to consider with a new roof installation:
  • Age.  How long has it been since you replaced your roof?  Has it been decades?  Has it been 5 years?  If it's not long ago or too long ago, it's already an alarming sign that the roof needs to be replaced.  If your asphalt shingles are missing a lot of granules, that's a sure sign.  If you are experiencing roof leaks and your roof is around 5 years old, you have serious problems where whether you realize it or not, your house is experiencing water damage.  These are considered roof repair emergencies!
  • Construction.  Is your roof sagging?  If it is, you may be vulnerable to a roof collapse once we receive some heavy snow.  It is only a matter of time!  This is also considered an emergency even if your roof hasn't yet collapsed.
  • Materials.  Does the shingle come with a warranty?  If so, how long is that warranty?  If so, does that warranty only cover the replacement of shingles or does it also cover the labor needed to fix those damaged shingles?  Quality of the materials should be considered as well as the warranty.
  • Budget.  Normally, people try to low-ball a roof.  It's understandable that you want to save money.  Quite frankly, if you're looking for the contractor that gives the lowest bid, buyer beware!!  You might as well not even replace your roof if you're going to do that because chances are you will have inferior materials, installation omissions where the installer doesn't include proper sheathing, insulation, or other materials that should be laid down prior to the shingles, cat-eyes due to nails missing the target, improper installation, lack of properly channeling water, chimney flashings not installed, etc.  At the same time, if you get an apples-for-apples bid that seems triple or quadruple the average price, it's safe to say you're being taken for a ride.  Put simply, don't discount your roof, but don't spend a fortune either.

Roofing Trends for 2020

Just going over these 4 key points may make you a little nervous.  That's understandable!  However, know that Skillville Corp. does NOT cut corners with your new roof installation.  Well...maybe if your 2x6 is off by 1/16th of an inch.  (Contractor joke).

  • Solar.  It should come to no surprise that roofs need to be properly built to hold the extra weight of solar panels.  If your roof appears to be sagging and you know it has to be replaced and you also plan on installing solar panels, it's best to get this fixed all at once rather one thing after the other.  Creating 2 projects rather 1 will only cost more in the long run.
  • Lighter colors.  Traditionally, many roofs are typically darker colors.  What we're seeing now is people are shopping for lighter colors or more interesting colors.  If you need help choosing color or to work with your existing color palette, feel free to seek the skilled at Skillville!
  • Textured / Patterned.  An example of this is a synthetic roof shingle made of polyurethane that replicates cedar shake.  This not only makes your roof / house look more interesting by increasing curb appeal...it also is long-lasting since it's made of polyurethane!
  • Metal.  This should also not be a surprise that many are switching over to metal roofing.  Generally, everyone seems to be creating their version of "Modern Farmhouse" and a metal roof only further compliments that style!  Metal roofing is more expensive, but if you live in New England, you already know how valuable metal roofing is when the snow doesn't stick and just slides right off!  This decreases the maintenance of having to drag your roof rake, potentially damaging your roof shingles, as well as roof collapsing.  However, metal roofing may not always be the correct solution for your roof.  Ask a skilled contractor at Skillville Corp for more info.
